Cancer

Cancer is a disease that affects the cells that make up the body. Healthy cells normally divide when they need replacing. But when our DNA (the genetic material in our cells) gets damaged, the cells keep on dividing until a lump or tumour develops. In some cases, these tumours can spread to other parts of the body.

We can help lower our risk of developing cancer by eating a healthy balanced diet that is low in fat (especially saturated fat), low in salt and sugar, contains plenty of fruit and vegetables and plenty of wholegrain starchy foods.

This section explains what causes cancer, how our diet and lifestyle can affect our chances of developing certain cancers, and gives you information about the four big cancers: breast, lung, colorectal and prostate cancer.
