Labelling terms

Man checking label on food tin

In this section on labelling terms, we try to answer the sorts of questions that you might be asking yourself when you pick up a product in the supermarket or corner shop.

The aim is to help you make healthier and more informed choices when you are out shopping.

About this section

Food labels are there to give us information so that we can choose between foods, but sometimes they can be confusing.

For example, how much lactose is in a 'reduced lactose' product? If something is 'light' or 'lite', what does this actually mean? And what does the Red Tractor tell me?

There are rules that food manufacturers must follow that protect us from false claims or misleading descriptions, and there are clear guidelines on what labels can and can't show.

Use the menu on the right-hand side to find out the rules for particular terms.
