Worried about spots?

Teenagers older group

Lots of us are worried about having problem skin. It's a myth that eating fried food and chocolate causes spots, but it is true that what you eat can help you look your best.

Vitamins and minerals Skin cells are being replaced all the time. So to help you look your best, you need to make sure your new cells are getting all the vitamins, minerals and other good stuff they need while they're growing.

Kiwi close up The best way to do this is to eat a healthy balanced diet. But what does this mean? Don't worry, it's not too difficult, you just need to:
  • eat lots of fruit and vegetables, at least 5 portions of a variety every day
  • base your meals on starchy foods, such as potatoes, rice and wholemeal bread
  • have moderate amounts of dairy products such as cheese, milk and yoghurt
  • watch how much salt you're eating - the maximum for anyone over the age of 11 is 6g a day (or 2.4g sodium)

crisps If you're worried that eating healthily means you'd need to give up all the stuff you enjoy eating, don't worry.

The key to a healthy diet is balance, which means that as long as you eat plenty of good stuff (such as fruit and veg), the odd chocolate bar or a packet of crisps once in a while won't do you any harm.
